Starting the Meetup – Talking Points

Leaders should make sure the following points are covered at the beginning of a ski meetup

  • Introductions
  • Review the definition of the applicable ski level and why it is important (no speedsters in mellow and no slow pokes in advanced).
  • Regroup outside the lift staging area. Make sure everyone is present, and for all intermediate groups (mellow, fast and advanced), decide which direction to exit from the chair.
  • Clear the unloading area to wait for the rest of the group
  • If participants leave the group for any reason, they must notify the event organizer.
  • If off-piste, emphasize the importance of the buddy system.

How to Post a New Meetup on BSC Meetup Group

  1. Go to the Meetup website and navigate to the BSC group.
  2. Select “Create Event”.
  3. Select “Edit a saved draft”.
  4. When you see the appropriate draft, Do NOT click on it!!!
  5. Instead, select “Manage Event” in the bottom right corner of the appropriate draft.
  6. Select “Copy Draft”.
  7. Make necessary changes to the details, including:
    • Title
    • Date
    • Time
    • Duration
    • Your phone number
    • Attendee limit
    • Add yourself as a Host and delete any other host listed
  8. Select “Preview”.
  9. Select “Publish”.
  10. Select “Announce”.
  11. You may make additions to the title.
  12. Make sure your phone number has been provided, where indicated.
  13. If you have a long waitlist and choose to divide the group, you can edit your post and add a second Meetup host and increase the limit. The second host will lead the waitlisted members.

Meetup Leader Guidelines

  • Use one of the four BSC-provided templates to post meetup events. Please follow all the steps to avoid altering the template.
  • You can then add information specific to your event (e.g., meeting location, your colors, likely terrain), but watch the word count. This can then be used/modified for your future events.
  • Make sure you pick the appropriate level for your meetup:
    • Mellow Intermediate – Groomers Only. Mostly blue runs, with a possible green run to warm up. Pace is relaxed and mellow, with stops on the runs to regroup.
    • Fast Intermediate – Mostly blue runs, with possibly groomed black runs if the conditions are right. Pace is moderately fast, with fewer stops on the runs to regroup.
    • Advanced Intermediate – More challenging. Blue and black runs. Easier off-piste for powder and easy trees. Relaxed pace, with stops on the runs to regroup.
    • Advanced – Requires the technical ability to ski anywhere on the mountain at a reasonably fast pace with fewer stops. Usually off-piste for non-groomed experience. Powder, trees, open areas, whatever is good.
  • Carry a cell phone and whistle.
  • Either carry a copy of the BSC Phone list on your phone or print and keep one with you.
  • Have the Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol phone number shortcutted in your phone: 541-693-0911.
  • Be a leader: the attendees expect meetup leaders to make/guide decisions.
  • In the event of an injury, please submit an accident report to the BSC president. He will provide a hard copy and/or electronic copy of the form from the BSC’s insurer.
  • All participants must be capable and willing to ski at the level described in your announcement. They are responsible for deciding whether to ski or not to ski with the group.
  • You, as the leader, may ask anyone to leave the group who cannot follow the instructions or behaves in an unsafe manner.
  • Anyone leaving the group must notify the leader first.
